What is chiropractic? Do I need a chiropractor?
Chiropractors are primary care physicians who focus on the body healing itself naturally and taking a holistic approach for most health conditions . Everyone can benefit from having chiropractic care because chiropractic care can be used for acute, chronic, or preventative health care. Just like a person visits a dentist for their teeth for both acute pain conditions and general cleaning maintenance. A chiropractor can also be seen for a painful acute injury to their spine or for maintaining the health of the spine and nervous system.
What can I expect on my first, second, follow-up visits?
On the initial visit Dr. D will perform a complete history and physical exam. Based on the history, and physical exam, Dr. D may need to order more diagnostic tests like x rays, MRIs, and lab tests to make a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is made a treatment plan is recommended if Dr. D can treat the specific condition. If not, a referral is made to the appropriate provider. Chiropractic treatments Dr. D uses include but not limited to chiropractic manipulation, Graston technique, class 4 laser therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, etc.
How many visits will I need?
Hard to say because the visit frequency and total number is determined on the specific condition being treated.
Will I have to have x-rays?
For chiropractic I will only refer for xrays, MRIs, blood tests, or any other diagnostic tests if needed.
Do I need a doctor referral?
I accept doctor referrals for chiropractic but no referral is needed to start treatment. This is also stated in the Guam law.
How long until I feel better?
Most conditions show some improvement right away but some conditions that may be chronic may require more time to see improvement depending on the condition and method of treatment being used.
Will I receive medication for my pain?
No, chiropractors are unable to prescribe medication on Guam.
The Core of Dr. D’s Chiropractic treatment
Chiropractic Adjustments/Manipulation. A chiropractic adjustment is a deliberate mechanical force delivered through a thrust in a precise direction to a specific segment, or group of segments in a joint complex, in your spine or extremities. Adjustments help normalize spinal function, relieving pressure, pain, and dysfunction that are created by joints that are “stuck”, “locked up”, or not moving properly. Living a full life often brings stress, injury, or repetitive movement patterns that can cause your spine and extremities to shift (or subluxate) out of anatomical alignment, limiting your body’s ability to function as it was meant to. Bringing your body back into normal alignment will restore its natural healing process so you can reach optimum health more easily.
Dr. D is highly skilled in administering these specific adjustments effectively based on his initial assessment, history and exam. He will see which specific vertebra and or extremities are in need of it. After an adjustment, you will experience some or all of the following: a sense of well-being or feeling of calmness (due to release of endorphins, which can induce feelings of pleasure and euphoria), symptom relief (due to releases endorphins and enkephalins, both natural pain killers in your body), and relaxation of surrounding muscles (due to your body’s response to a stretch reflex). Adjustments also act as a reset button to your nervous system, exciting localized mechanoreceptors and proprioceptive nerves in your tissues, making your muscles and nerves more receptive to neuromuscular re-education of your movement patterns. Learning how your body can move and function better is a lot easier after the immediate relief and effects experienced after your adjustments.
- Program uses science and clinical experience to eliminate guessing and gives specific enough recommendations to guarantee results.
- Program is universal and can work with any form of exercise the patient prefers to use.
- Program takes a natural approach although supplements can be used to aid the process and enhance results (past medical history may limit supplement recommendations).
- A lot of great change can be made in 12 weeks if you are dedicated and stick to the recommendations and “game plan”.
Program Overview: 12 weeks total
First week (3 visits) includes:
- History and exam
- Review of past health history and lab tests
- Realistic goal setting during the 12 weeks for specific patient
- Testing (ultrasound body composition measurement, metabolic testing (RMR), objective measurements, BMI
Individual workout plan can be created according to patient’s goals and specific recommended nutritional meal plan or meal plan can be used with current workouts.
Biweekly one on one follow ups to evaluate patient’s response and progress. Adjustments and modifications recommended based on progress. Bringing lab results down (if below optimal levels) is also one of the main goals.
